First 53-man roster contains a few surprises

- KENT SOMERS

The Cardinals produced the first version of their 53-man roster on Saturday, but it likely will undergo revisions before the team returns Monday to begin work for the regular-season opener at Detroit.

The Cardinals released 31 players, including guard Dorian Johnson, their fourth-round pick this year, and center/ guard Cole Toner, a fifth-round pick in 2016.

Both are eligible to join the practice squad, which can begin being formed on Sunday.

The Cardinals also placed receiver Aaron Dobson on injured reserve, waived/injured defensive tackle Ed Stinson and reached injury settlements with linebackers Jarvis Jones and Tre’Von Johnson

Not everyone on the current 53-man roster will be practicing on Monday. Rookie running back T.J. Logan, who underwent surgery on his wrist, had to make the initial roster in order to be available to return this season.

Players placed on injured reserve on Saturday are not eligible to play this season.

Logan likely will be moved to injured reserve soon, opening a roster spot. Logan is expected to be out until around mid-season.

Matt Wile beat out Richie Leone for the punting job, but that, too, could change in the next few days.

The Cardinals are in interested in signing punter Andy Lee, who was cut by the Panthers on Saturday.

A 13-year veteran, Lee lost his job this year to Michael Palardy, who took over last year when Lee suffered a hamstring injury in Week 10.

Lee, 35, was averaging 49.1 yards before suffering the injury last year. He’s a nice fit for the Cardinals, partly because he was the holder for kicker Phil Dawson when both were with the 49ers in 2013 and ’14.

Dawson signed with the Cardinals this offseason.

Cardinals coach Bruce Arians and General Manager Steve Keim were not available for comment on Saturday.

Six of the team’s seven draft picks made the roster, but no rookie free agents did.
