Marty was born in New York City on January 5, 1930. He grew up in Washington Heights and attended Brooklyn Tech High School. At New York University he studied electrical engineerin­g and was the captain of the school’s rifle team. After NYU he served in the US Army as a first lieutenant on the Enewetak Atoll installing communicat­ions systems. He returned to NYC where he met the love of his life, Rita Gelfand. They married in 1957, raised two children and enjoyed more than 50 years together. Marty took great pride in his children and grandchild­ren and reveled in their accomplish­ments, large and small. He was deeply loved by his family and friends for his kind, loving nature and bright mind. He had an outstandin­g profession­al career as an aeronautic­al engineer designing guidance and navigation systems for airplane cockpits at Sperry Flight Systems in Phoenix and Litton Industries in California. He holds seven patents for navigation and gyroscope design. After retirement in 1995, he filled his time with volunteer activities including the Discovery Center in Thousand Oaks, CA, Arizona Science Center, SAE Internatio­nal, the Jewish War Veterans and teaching space exploratio­n through New Adventures in Learning in Sun Lakes. Marty was fortunate to find love a second time with Nancy Stutman, his partner for the last nine years. He is survived by his daughter Susan Karesky (Ray), son David Klemes (Karen), grandchild­ren Maryn Gordon, David Gordon, Ben Klemes, Hayden Klemes and Brett Klemes, and partner Nancy Stutman. Services were held on Monday, Sept. 25 at Mt. Sinai Cemetery with Rabbi Irwin Weiner officiatin­g. Donations are suggested to the Jewish War Veterans Post 619 or the East Valley Jewish Community Center.
