Cespedes’ minor-league rehab assignment runs into a setback

NEW YORK – As if the New York Mets needed any more bad news, now they have no idea when they might get Yoenis Cespedes back.

Sidelined for nearly a month by a nagging hip injury, the oft-injured slugger had his minor league rehabilitation assignment cut short Sunday following a setback.

Cespedes, on the disabled list since May 14 because of a strained right hip flexor, hit two doubles Saturday in his second rehab game for Double-A Binghamton but was removed early with tightness in his right quadriceps.

“Same thing,” manager Mickey Callaway said Sunday. “It’s where the quad attaches to the hip.”

Hero one day, gone the next: Brewers option Choi to minors: The hero for the Milwaukee Brewers on Saturday is on his way to the minors a day later.

The Brewers optioned Ji-Man Choi to Triple-A Colorado Springs on Sunday, a day after he hit a go-ahead, pinch-hit grand slam in the Brewers’ 12-3 win over the Philadelphia Phillies.

The move was made to open a roster spot for right-hander Brandon Woodruff, who started Sunday against the Phillies.

Choi was brought up in part to serve as the designated hitter in interleague series last week in Chicago and Cleveland. He is hitting .233 with two homers and five RBIs in 12 games in the big leagues this season.

Judge held out of Yankees’ lineup to rest jammed left thumb: Aaron Judge is being held out of the starting lineup to rest his jammed left thumb as the New York Yankees try for a Subway Series sweep against the Mets.

With an off day coming up Monday, manager Aaron Boone says he’s just playing “the long game” and simply wants to take the opportunity to give Judge consecutive days off.
