AIA cancels Sollenberger Classic

-

The Arizona Interscholastic Association announced Thursday that the Sollenberger Classic won't be played this year for second time in four years.

David Hines, executive director of the AIA, said the hope this year was to have a team from New Mexico or Nevada play an Arizona team at Northern Arizona but it didn't work out because of the new two-year scheduling block. Hines said in a text that the AIA will "try to bring it back next year." The past two years, only Arizona teams faced off in the classic, which was named in honor of Arizona high school sports historian Barry Sollenberger, who died in 2005. The AIA wants to make it a double-header next year.
