Joaquin Phoenix gives a tremendous performanc­e as cartoonish John Callahan in Gus Van Sant’s non-traditiona­l biopic. Uneven, but the acting is superb. (R — 113 minutes) N, P, S.

‘Eighth Grade’ ★★★★1⁄

Comedian Bo Burnham’s feature debut as a director is fantastic, and Elsie Fisher is brilliant as a girl navigating the perilous last days of junior high. (R — 94 minutes) P, S.

‘The Equalizer 2’ ★★★★

(Barbara VanDenburg­h) The rare sequel that improves on its predecesso­r by every possible metric. This time, vengeance is personal for Denzel Washington’s deadly ex-CIA operative. (R — 121 minutes) P, V, D.

‘Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again’ ★★★★

(Randy Cordova) Sequel/prequel brings us up-tospeed on characters from the 2008 film while digging deeper into the ABBA catalogue. Mindless, intentiona­lly campy and a bit crazy, yet downright engaging most of the time. (PG-13 — 114 minutes)

‘Niños Asesinos’

(Not reviewed) Inspired by true stories, this film looks at four youngsters who became killers, and examines what led them to that point. (Not rated — 112 minutes)

STILL PLAYING ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp’ ★★★1⁄

Paul Rudd and director Peyton Reed return for a sequel that improves on the original. A minimal plot allows for maximum goofiness; it works. (PG-13 — 118 minutes) V.

‘Book Club’ ★1⁄

A terrific cast — Jane Fonda, Diane Keaton, Mary Steenburge­n and Candice Bergen — is wasted in this dopey comedy about ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ reignited their spark. (PG-13 — 104 minutes) P, S.

‘Boundaries’ ★★★

(Randy Cordova) Road-tripping tale about a neurotic single mom (Vera Farmiga) and her father (Christophe­r Plummer) heading to California with her son in tow. (R — 104 minutes) D, P.

‘The Catcher was a Spy’ ★★

(Barbara VanDenburg­h) An attractive looking but ultimately vapid historical espionage drama about baseball player Moe Berg’s exploits as a WWII spy. (R – 98 minutes) P, S, V.

‘Damsel’ ★★★1⁄

David and Nathan Zellner have fun with Western tropes in their offbeat film; they get a lot of help from Robert Pattinson and Mia Wasikowska. (R — 113 minutes) N, P, S, V.

‘Deadpool 2’ ★★★★

Ryan Reynolds returns as the Mavel antihero. Cynical as ever, tragedy overtakes him as a new threat named Cable (Josh Brolin) emerges. (R — 119 minutes) D, P, S, V.

‘The First Purge’ ★★

(Barbara VanDenburg­h) An absolute charmer about a widowed father and coming-of-age daughter connecting, and healing, through their shared passion for music. (PG-13 — 97 minutes) P, D.

‘Hotel Transylvan­ia 3: Summer Vacation’ ★★1⁄

(Barbara VanDenburg­h) Dracula goes on a cruise and falls in love with Van Helsing’s great-granddaugh­ter. The creative well might be running dry on this franchise. (PG — 97 minutes).

‘Incredible­s 2’ ★★★★

Elastigirl (Holly Hunter) fights crime while Mr. Incredible (Craig T. Nelson) changes diapers in Pixar’s latest sequel. (PG — 118 minutes)

‘Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom’ ★★1⁄

Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard return for another installmen­t, with J.A. Bayona directing. (PG-13 — 128 minutes) V.

‘The King’ ★★★1⁄

Director Eugene Jarecki uses Elvis Presley as a metaphor for America in his uneven, entertaini­ng documentar­y. (R — 107 minutes) P.

‘Leave No Trace’ ★★★★1⁄

Ben Foster and Thomasin McKenzie are great in Debra Granik’s film, about a father and daughter living off the grid. (PG — 109 minutes)

‘Ocean’s 8’ ★★1⁄

Sandra Bullock plays the leader of an all-woman crime team pulling off a big heist. (PG-13 — 110 minutes) D, P.

‘RBG’ ★★★★

Julie Cohen and Betsy West’s documentar­y examines the rock-start status of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. (PG — 97 minutes)

‘Sanju’

(Not reviewed) Ranbir Kapoor stars as Sanjay Dutt in this biopic about the controvers­ial life of the actor. (Not rated — 155 minutes)

‘Shock and Awe’ ★1⁄

(Kerry Lengel) This drama about Knight Ridder reporters challengin­g the White House during the run-up to the Iraq war stars and is directed by liberal icon Rob Reiner. (R — 90 minutes) P.

‘Sicario: Day of the Soldado’ ★★★1⁄

The great Benecio Del Toro talks too much in this sequel, which misses Emily Blunt’s voice of reason among shady operatives trying to stop cartels from smuggling terrorists into the U.S. (R — 122 minutes) P, V.

‘Skyscraper’ ★★1⁄

Dwayne Johnson stars as a former FBI agent trying to save his family from a fire threatenin­g the world’s tallest building. Big and dumb, and a little fun. (PG-13 — 102 minutes) P, V.

‘Sorry to Bother You’ ★★★★1⁄

Boots Riley makes a spectacula­r feature debut, directing a film about a telemarket­er (Lakeith Stanfield) whose life gets weird as he grows successful. (R — 105 minutes) D, N, P, S.

‘Solo’ ★★★1⁄

Alden Ehrenreich plays the young Han Solo in Ron Howard’s film. Well made and enjoyable, but absolutely inessentia­l. (PG-13 — 135 minutes) V.

‘Tag’ ★★1⁄

Jon Hamm and Jeremy Renner lead a good cast in Jeff Tomsic’s film about lifelong friends who have played the same game of tag for 30 years. (R — 100 minutes) D, N, P, S.

‘Three Identical Strangers’ ★★★★

Tim Wardle’s documentar­y explores triplets separated at birth who find each other in their 20s. The film asks questions; the answers prove frustratin­g. (PG-13 — 96 minutes)

‘Uncle Drew’ ★★1⁄

NBA star Kyrie Irving stars in an expansion of his Pepsi commercial­s; he plays Uncle Drew, an elderly legend who’s still got game. Stupid and predictabl­e, but goofy fun. (PG-13 — 103 minutes) N, P.

‘Whitney’ ★★★★1⁄

(Randy Cordova) Powerful documentar­y looks at the rise and fall of Whitney Houston. (R — 120 minutes) D, P.

‘Won’t You Be My Neighbor?’ ★★★★1⁄

Morgan Neville’s documentar­y about Fred Rogers, the children’s TV show host, is quietly moving, much like the man himself, and most welcome. (PG-13 — 94 minutes) P.
