Man shown in viral video from Uganda is an Arizonan

An Arizona man claiming to be a missionary was released from jail in Uganda after a video went viral depicting him yelling racial slurs and attempting to hit hotel staff.

According to Kampala Metropolitan Police, Jimmy L. Taylor was arrested on suspicion of assault and malicious damage following the incident. Officials told The Arizona Republic Taylor is an Arizona resident and was released on bond.

It was unclear Monday whether Taylor was still in Uganda.

The department posted photos of Taylor’s arrest to social media on Friday. Police said Taylor claimed an illness caused him to suffer stress that drove him to attack the hotel staff.

“Footage from security television cameras installed showed a foreigner, identified later as Mr. Jimmy L. Taylor punching and humiliating a hotel employee,” said the Facebook post. “Upon police efforts to effect his arrest Taylor spat on, turned rowdy, uncontrollable and tried to disarm policemen.” The police department told The Republic he was released because, “it’s a constitutional right.”

In the viral video, a man can be seen jumping over a counter and following an employee.

“Come here! You hate Jesus, you hate yourself, you hate me, you disgrace Jesus,” said the man before hitting the employee in the face.

The vast majority of Ugandans are Christian, according to census data. According to 2014 data, nearly 40 percent of the country was Catholic.

According to the Pew Research Center, more than 4 in 10 Christians are expected to live in sub-Saharan Africa by 2060.

The man in the video shouted expletives and racial slurs at the employees, while demanding they unlock his room. He also accuses them of not repenting to be saved from their sins.

“Three-quarters of you are going to f--king die in three days,” the man said.
