Lions bolster LB position in trade with the 49ers

ALLEN PARK, Mich. – The Detroit Lions bolstered their depth at linebacker by acquiring Eli Harold in a trade with San Francisco.

Detroit gave the 49ers a draft pick, which was not disclosed, in exchange for Harold on Thursday. The Lions made room for him by waiving defensive lineman JoJo Wicker.

Detroit lost Steve Longa, a backup linebacker and key player on special teams, last week with a season-ending knee injury.

Harold started 24 games for San Francisco and played in 48 games over three seasons. He played in every game last season, starting 10 times, and had 34 tackles and two sacks.

San Francisco drafted the former Virginia standout in the third round in 2015. He has 84 tackles and five sacks in his career. Steelers sign kicker Chris Boswell

to new 5-year contract: The Pittsburgh Steelers and Pro Bowl kicker Chris Boswell have agreed to a new five-year contract that will keep him in black and gold through the 2022 season.

Boswell was entering the final season of his current deal and was scheduled to be a restricted free agent at the end of the year. Bills place linebacker Robinson on

reserve/retired list: The Buffalo Bills have placed linebacker Keenan Robinson on the reserve/retired list.

The move on Thursday comes a month after the Bills signed the sixthyear player just before they opened training camp.

The Raiders added another veteran to their secondary on Thursday and cut 2017 second-round pick Obi Melifonwu to make room. Chiefs still without 3 defensive

starters for preseason game: The Chiefs will remain without three defensive starters, including star safety Eric Berry, when they visit the Chicago Bears for their third preseason game this weekend.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid said Thursday that Berry was still dealing with a heel injury that has kept him out of practice the past few weeks. Berry returned during the summer from a torn Achilles tendon only to have the heel injury crop up early in training camp.

Defensive end Allen Bailey is out with a knee injury and cornerback Steven Nelson with a concussion. Cowboys’ George Andrie, who played in Ice Bowl, dead at 78: George Andrie, the former Dallas Cowboys defensive end who scored a touchdown in the Ice Bowl game against Green Bay in 1967, has died. He was 78.

The Cowboys confirmed the death of Andrie. He died Tuesday at his home in Woodway, Texas. Andrie’s family has said he suffered from dementia.

Andrie was among the former players who sued the NFL over claims that the league knew repeated head blows could lead to chronic traumatic encephalop­athy, a degenerati­ve brain disease. Experts have linked CTE to dementia, among other conditions.
