James Walter MacAllen
SCOTTSDALE – James Walter MacAllen was born and raised in Hingham, Massachusetts. His parents were civic-minded, and Jim carried on that tradition throughout his life. He graduated in 1962 from Hingham High and went on to Bowdoin College where their motto of serving the common good reinforced Jim’s civic-minded approach to life. He graduated from Bowdoin in 1966 and served the College in many capacities, receiving their Alumni Service Award in 2016. He also attended University of Virginia’s Darden School where he earned his MBA.
Jim had a try-out with the Philadelphia Eagles in 1966 and continued his athletic pursuits throughout his life. He was inducted into Bowdoin’s Athletic Hall of Honor for his distinguished football career at the College.
Jim worked for many years in the financial sector, serving as CEO of several companies. But most importantly, he served many nonprofit organizations in a financial, investment, or leadership capacity and took a philanthropic role in support of these worthy causes.
Jim would want to be remembered as having lived a life of grace and gratitude. And he was truly grateful for all he received in friendship and camaraderie from more friends than can be enumerated.
He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Patricia Steinke MacAllen; daughter Carrie (Steve) Baumgartner, children Brooke, Grace, and Patrick; son David (Jenna) MacAllen, children Morgan, Trace, and Raelyn; sisterin-law Barbara (Phil) Schroeder, children Dawne, David, and Donna and their respective spouses and offspring. He also leaves behind a brother in spirit and devoted friend, Ralph (Mia) Yohe and fellow mensch Jan Downey.
A celebration of Jim’s life will be held at the United Church of Christ of Norwell, 460 Main Street, Norwell, MA at 11 a.m. on Saturday, September 1, 2018. A later celebration of his life will be held in Scottsdale, Arizona in the Fall. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Jim’s memory can be made to whatever organization or choral group the donor associates with Jim or to Friendship Home, 458 Main St., Norwell, MA 02061.
