SCOTTSDALE – Dr. Melvin (Mel) Fields of Scottsdale, Arizona passed away peacefully on August 18, 2018, surrounded by his loving family. Mel was born January 15, 1926 to Ben and Sadie Fields in St. Louis, MO. In 1930 the family, including his younger brother Richard, moved to Douglas, AZ. Following graduation from Douglas High in 1944 he served in the US Navy during WWII for two years. Mel attended ASU and U of A before entering St. Louis University Dental School. After graduation in 1952, he moved to Phoenix and began his dental practice, which lasted 43 years. He volunteere­d at Mercy Clinic at St. Joseph’s Hospital once a week for 40 years.

Mel is survived by his loving wife, Eleanor (Ellie) and their five children: Tim Fields of Solana Beach, CA; Pamela Wilcox (Warren) of Austin, TX; Bridget Hanhila (Matt) of Phoenix; Missy Smith (Drew) of Paradise Valley; Patty Calabrese (Nol) of Solana Beach, CA and ten grandchild­ren.

Mel will be remembered as a wonderful husband, father and friend. He had a passion for adventure including rafting the Colorado River, boat racing, water skiing and snow skiing. He celebrated his 90th birthday skydiving. He was a die-hard Arizona State University fan, attending Sun Devil games for more than 60 years. In 2014 he was recognized by the University as ASU’s longest tenured basketball season ticket holder.

Mel’s biggest joys in life were his family and friends. He had a heart for the underprivi­leged and volunteere­d weekly at St. Vincent de Paul. In his free time, he loved hiking, spending time in Munds Park, working in his workshop and travel.
