Kathleen (Kathy) Colman Swanston


SCOTTSDALE Kathleen (Kathy) Colman Swanston passed away at age 92 in Scottsdale, Arizona. Kathy was born March 16, 1926 to Frieda and Stub (Everett) Colman. The family survived the depression and prospered. Kathy attended Fargo Central High School and was a Gamma Phi Beta at North Dakota State University. Her great adventure began near the end of World War II when she travelled from Fargo to New York City to study and graduate with her degree in Interior Design from New York School of Design. Kathy returned to Fargo and began her career as an Interior Designer. She met and married her husband Bill Swanston in 1954. Kathy was a great wife and business partner as Bill grew his company in Fargo, Swanston Equipment Company. They travelled extensivel­y and danced together throughout their marriage. As a couple they skied, played tennis, and golf. Kathy took up painting when she was 40 years old and she was an accomplish­ed painter in many techniques. She showed and sold her work for many years. After taking several years off to manage her family, Kathy returned to work as an Interior Designer signing on with Jack Akre & Associates. She was not only an accomplish­ed artist she was also a successful business woman. Her most favorite place in the world was her home on Lake Melissa near Detroit Lakes, Minnesota. She was a familiar site on her long walks around the lake. Kathy is survived by her older brother, Don Colman, her three children; Robin (Ray), Mike (Linda Finsness), and Kelly (Dana Woudenberg). She loved her grandchild­ren, Robb Ray, Kala Swanston and Molly Swanston, their spouses and her great grandchild­ren. She is predecease­d by her parents and husband. She was a talented and stylish woman who loved all things beautiful. She made the world special to all who knew her. The family would like to thank Hospice of the Valley, her private caregivers (Patti, Pamela and Kym) and the caring staff (Nurses and PALS) at Belmont Village in Scottsdale. A celebratio­n of her life and art will be held at the Silverleaf Club, 18701 North Silverleaf Drive, Scottsdale, Arizona on November 4th, 2018 from 4:30 – 6:30 p.m.
