Red Cross calls for blood and platelet donations

- Sierra Poore KELSEY MO/THE REPUBLIC

The American Red Cross issued a call Tuesday morning for immediate blood and platelet donations because of a severe shortage.

The Red Cross also said it was in need of blood drive hosts to prevent the shortage from getting worse over the winter, according to an American Red Cross news release.

During September and October, 21,000 fewer blood and platelet donations were donated than what hospitals needed, the Red Cross said.

The shortage is believed to have resulted, in part, because of hurricanes Michael and Florence, which caused thousands of blood and platelet donations to go uncollected.

“This time of year, as many give thanks for family, friends and good health, it’s important to remember that patients across the country cannot survive without your generosity,” said Cliff Numark, senior vice president of Red Cross Biomedical Services, in the news release.

Eligible donors can use the free Blood Donor App to find a blood or platelet donation opportunity and schedule an appointment to donate.

While all donations are encouraged, the Red Cross said it is particularly in need of type O and platelet donors.

Potential donors also can visit RedCrossBlood.org or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767).

To encourage donations around the Thanksgiving holiday, anyone who comes to donate blood or platelets with the Red Cross during Nov. 21-24 will receive a long-sleeved Red Cross T-shirt while supplies last.

Anyone interested in hosting a blood drive can learn more and sign up to sponsor a drive this winter, by visiting RedCrossBlood.org/HostADrive.
