DES MOINES – Virgil A. Maxwell, of Des Moines, Iowa, born on August 22, 1933 in Yarmouth, Iowa, to the late Grace and Guy Maxwell of Winfield, Iowa, passed away at age 85 on November 14, 2018. Virgil graduated from Drake University in 1955 and Indiana University for graduate school in 1968. Virgil served in the Air National Guard from 1955 to 1977 and retired as a Colonel. Virgil was a leading force within the banking industry. He started his career at Midland Financial/Des Moines Savings where he served as First Vice President. Virgil became President and CEO of Ames Savings & Loan in 1977. He would later become the President at Statesman’s Bank for Savings until he retired in 1996. Virgil was the beloved husband of Peggy Walker; former husband of the late Margaret Wickard. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Pauline and Norma. Virgil is survived by his sons, Scott (Michelle) and Todd (T.J.); daughter, Pam (Craig); step-sons, Rob (Stacy) and Drake (Stacy) Walker; sisters, Virginia Hillyard and Naomi (Bob) Lindell; grandchild­ren, Chase, Jacob and Tyler Baumgartne­r, James (Shay), Rio, Logan, Austin, and Samantha Maxwell; step-grandchild­ren, Hailey, Zachary, Emily and Anthony Walker and great-grandchild, Oakley. Virgil wintered in Scottsdale since the 1980’s and called it his second home.

Funeral Services were held on Tuesday, November 20 at Plymouth Church followed by burial at Glendale Cemetery, Des Mones. Memorial contributi­ons may be directed to SCI-CAN Foundation, Puppy Jake Foundation or EveryStep Hospice. Online condolence­s welcome at IlesCares.com.
