Ace takes time to smell the roses ... and everything else

- — Kelsey Dickerson, Arizona Humane Society

Every year, about 6.5 million companion animals enter shelters nationwide, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Of those, about 3.3 million are dogs and 3.2 million are cats.

Each week, The Arizona Republic highlights a handful of the many pets up for adoption at Valley shelters. To check the status of a specific animal, please contact the shelter directly.

Ace

When it comes to card games, an ace is definitely the card you always want in your hand. But when it comes to Ace the pup, you simply cannot go wrong having him as a part of your life. The Labrador retriever mix is 8 years old and has plenty of pep in his step when he’s not basking in the sun or taking a little snooze after a yummy meal.

Ace was brought to the Arizona Humane Society all the way back in August when a Good Samaritan found him wandering the streets of Queen Creek. The poor pup had a mass the size of a cantaloupe on his back hip, which made everyone wonder how he was still able to get around. Luckily, the handsome senior was brought to the right place and he was able to get all patched up after the mass was removed in AHS’ Second Chance Animal Trauma Hospital.

In honor of Senior Pet Awareness Month, Ace wants everyone to know that although he may have a few gray hairs on his face, he is still a puppy at heart and is able to give all the love he receives and then some. Although he can be a bit shy at first, the golden doggo warms up very quickly (especially when treats are involved).

An expert walker, Ace definitely takes the time to stop and smell the roses … and bushes … and anything, really.

HOW TO ADOPT: To give Ace a forever home for the holidays, visit him when he is available for adoption today at noon at the Arizona Humane Society’s Campus for Compassion at 1521 W. Dobbins Road in Phoenix. His adoption fee includes his neuter surgery, current vaccinations, a microchip and a free follow-up wellness exam with a VCA Animal Hospital.
