Calif. dual-threat Daniels says ASU 1 of 4 finalists

- Michelle Gardner

One of the hottest quarterback prospects in the country will decide on a college next week and Arizona State is among his final four schools.

Dual-threat quarterback Jayden Daniels of Cajon High School in San Bernardino, Calif. said on Twitter he will announce his decision Dec. 13. He lists ASU, Utah, UCLA and Cal as his final four.

Daniels, who visited Tempe the weekend of the UCLA game, started every varsity game in his four years at Cajon. One factor that might favor Utah is that Daniels' teammate, 6-foot-9 wide receiver Darren Jones, has already committed to the Utes.

The Sun Devils already have two quarterback commits in the 2019 class — Joey Yellen out of Mission Viejo, Calif. and Ethan Long out of West Linn, Ore. Both plan to sign during the early period Dec. 19-21.

Lambert suffers knee injury

One of ASU's freshmen sustained a serious knee injury in practice Wednesday morning.

Outside linebacker Stanley Lambert announced on his twitter account he tore his ACL, MCL and several other ligaments and expects to have surgery in the next week.

Over the course of the season, ASU

coaches have spoken highly of Lambert, a native of San Antonio, Texas. He played in the first three games of the season. He is 6-foot-4 but only 217 pounds so the plan all along has been for him to redshirt so he could work in the weight room and add some bulk to an athletic frame.

Wren accepts invite

Defensive lineman Renell Wren, one of few seniors in the Sun Devils starting lineup, accepted an invitation to participate in the 2019 Senior Bowl on Jan. 26 at Ladd-Peebles Stadium in Mobile, Ala.

Wren, 6-foot-6, 297-pounds, played in all 12 games and recorded 37 tackles in his first year as a full-time starter. He was an All-Pac-12 honorable mention and served as one of the Sun Devils four team captains this season. He was also presented the team's Iron Man Award at Sunday's annual football banquet.

Timing not an issue for ASU

The timing of ASU's Las Vegas Bowl appearance opposite Fresno State might seem a bit inconvenient for the Sun Devil coaching staff. The game will take place Dec. 15, just four days before the early signing date for football and the week before is one usually spent visiting potential recruits. However, the staff isn't concerned.

"We're in good shape. We really got a good jump on everything and were able to get ahead," offensive coordinator Rob Likens said. "If we hadn't then it could have been an issue."
