Friday's game

Southern University at Arizona State women’s basketball When: 6 p.m.

Radio: KDUS-AM (1060).

Outlook: ASU (5-2) is up two places to No. 17 in the AP top 25 and up four spots to No. 19 (tie) in the USA Today coaches poll following wins last week over Louisiana Tech and Tulsa. The Sun Devils are playing their third straight game at home before going back on the road Sunday at Colorado State (4-3), which beat Northern Arizona 65-54 on Wednesday . ... Southern (2-4) with four consecutive losses including to No. 4 Baylor, 94-49. ASU also has played Baylor, losing 65-59 in Fort Defiance on Nov. 11.

It's not as if Sophia Elenga magically transformed into a bigger contributor for Arizona State women's basketball by changing her hair color to maroon. The 6-1 forward steadily progressed last season, her first at ASU after transferring from Cochise College. She shot 60.6 percent in Pac-12 games and maintained that level during Pac-12/NCAA Tournament play. But for the longest time, it appeared Elenga would be one-and-done in Division I because of eligibility uncertainty going stemming from repeating a year in high school in her native France and a gap year before starting at Cochise.
