Jean Valjean is a valiant kitty

- — Kelsey Dickerson, Arizona Humane Society

Every year, approximately 6.5 million companion animals enter shelters nationwide, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Of those, about 3.3 million are dogs and 3.2 million are cats.

Each week, The Arizona Republic highlights a handful of the many pets up for adoption at Valley shelters. To check the status of a specific animal, please contact the shelter directly.

Jean Valjean

A valiant character who is never “Les Miserables,” handsome Jean Valjean has remained hopeful and loving although he was given many reasons not to. Found as an injured stray by a Good Samaritan in December of last year, the 6-year-old black domestic shorthair had a wound on his back hind leg, as well as cloudy eyes.

When further examined by the Arizona Humane Society’s Second Chance Animal Trauma Hospital, Jean was alert and quiet, but still friendly with everyone as he knew they were there to help him. The wounds on his leg were sutured up by AHS vets, and it was found that the sleek kitty cat has corneal scarring, giving him a gray look on his eyes but, at this time, still allows him to see.

As with any protagonist, Jean Valjean is a courageous and resilient soul who has not only helped himself succeed but also sees the best in everyone. This black kitty is full of love and enjoys meeting new people. He could also be a star in any musical, as he has a beautiful purr and is a great dancer when he is going between people looking for his favorite pastime — getting attention, of course.

HOW TO ADOPT: Jean Valjean will be available today at noon at the Arizona Humane Society’s Sunnyslope Campus at 1521 W. Dobbins Road in Phoenix. His adoption fee includes his neuter surgery, current vaccinations, a microchip and a free follow-up wellness exam with a VCA Animal Hospital. For more information, call 602-9977585 and ask for animal number 595632.
