SCOTTSDALE – Harriett Uretta (Barnett) Howard, of Scottsdale, AZ, died at home with family on December 28, 2018. She was alert and positive in spite of various health issues.

Harriett was born on Christmas day, December 25, 1930 in Indianapol­is, Indiana, to Harry and Mary (Taylor) Barnett. Preceding her in death were her parents, a loving sister Berneice Forgey, a brotherin-law Herschel Forgey, and a step-father Clarence Spurgeon. The latter three of Brownstown, Indiana.

On February 4, 1951, Harriett married Lloyd Howard of Seymour, Indiana in Brownstown. Lloyd is a Purdue EE graduate and worked 17 years for General Electric living in numerous cities in PA, NY, OH and GA. In 1967 Lloyd changed careers and went to Brite Divinity School at TCU in Fort Worth, TX, to become a minister. This change led to more moves including Cisco, Lancaster, Dallas, Orange and Garland in TX, and Neodesha, KS They retired in Bonham, TX, and then moved to Sun City West and finally Scottsdale both in AZ.

Harriett was a loving wife and mother of four children as well as a dedicated teacher. She attended Butler University and was a teacher’s aide in Cisco and Lancaster, TX. In her early 40’s, she attended Dallas Baptist College where she received her BS in Elementary Education and English. She then got her Masters Degree in the same field from Texas Woman’s University. She loved teaching young children and taught kindergart­en in Dallas, Orangefiel­d and Bonham, TX. She was named Teacher of the Year at Bayles Elementary in Dallas, TX, and a finalist in 1995 for Dallas Teacher of the Year. Profession­ally, she has been a member of the Dallas Assn. of Profession­al Educators and also the Texas Retirement Teacher’s Assn. She was active in the Delta Kappa Gamma Society (an internatio­nal society that promotes profession­al and personal growth of educators and excellence in education.)

Harriett was a member of the choir, volunteer, participan­t, and leader in the Christian Churches (Disciples of Christ) everywhere she lived. Her hobbies included walking, bike riding, cards, and travel. She had the opportunit­y to visit a majority of the States, including Alaska and Hawaii; as well as sixteen foreign countries plus all of Great Britain.

Harriett is survived by her loving husband of nearly 68 years, Lloyd of Scottsdale, AZ, a retired Minister for the Christian Church (DoC)); her 4 children; Mrs. Cathy (Dan) Clem, of Scottsdale, AZ; David (Patti) Howard, of Kirkwood, MO; Myke (Lily) Howard, of Spring, TX; and Cheryl (John) Briney, of Scottsdale, AZ; 11 grandchild­ren; and 10 great grandchild­ren.

A Celebratio­n of Life service will be held Saturday, February 2, 10:30 AM, at the First Christian Church, 7405 E McDonald, Scottsdale, AZ, 85250. Memorials may be sent to the Church or to the Scholarshi­p Fund, Omega Chapter, Delta Kappa Gamma Society.
