High-schoolers now can apply for free ASU journalism camp
Students can now apply for 2019’s High School Media Innovation Camp at Arizona State University’s Cronkite School of Journalism. In partnership with The Arizona Republic/azcentral.com, the residential summer camp pairs high-school students with entrepreneurs, technologists, journalists and professors to create compelling content for digital audiences. From June 16-28, Arizona highschool students will build an augmented-reality app, learn how to use the Unity game engine to create interactive content and games, and work with virtual-reality tools to build immersive storytelling experiences.
“Journalism is changing. While good reporting never goes out of style, delivery of information changes all of the time,” said Retha Hill, executive director of the New Media Innovation and Entrepreneurship Lab.
“For young people to learn how to create immersive content — such as in augmented or virtual reality — they will have the advantage of being masters of all media,” Hill added.
Housing, food and programming are provided by The Republic’s Media in Education program.
Students will be based at the Cronkite campus in downtown Phoenix. They will be housed in a residence hall near the Cronkite building and supervised by faculty and senior students.
The camp is open to Arizona highschoolers who have completed at least their sophomore year by the time the program starts, and have a strong interest in developing digital journalism.
Students must complete an application form and provide a transcript and a letter of recommendation from a teacher or adviser. All materials may be submitted online at cronkite.asu.edu. The deadline is March 1.
