Every year, approximately 6.5 million companion animals enter shelters nationwide, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Of those, about 3.3 million are dogs and 3.2 million are cats.

Each week, The Arizona Republic highlights a handful of the many pets up for adoption at Valley shelters. To check the status of a specific animal, please contact the shelter directly.

Kobe: Not Bryant, but he still has fans

If you are a native of Phoenix, you may not be the biggest fan of the NBA player this adorable pup is named after, however this Kobe is sure anyone who meets him will be his biggest admirer in no time at all. Always the first to greet with a large, goofy smile, sweet eyes and a wag of his fluffy tail, the 4-year-old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel mix is about as delightful as they come.

In the relatively short amount of time this cutie pie has been with AHS, Kobe has already captured the hearts of all those who know him. AHS staff says this furry friend is a super smart guy who is eager to learn. He even mastered jumping over hurdles and going through the agility poles in one of the play yards. With a happy disposition, great ability to walk on a leash and always checking in with his human friends for love, Kobe is sure to make a great furry friend.

How to adopt: Kobe is available for adoption today at the Arizona Humane Society’s Campus for Compassion location at 1521 W. Dobbins Road in Phoenix. His adoption fee includes his neuter surgery, current vaccinations, a microchip and a free follow-up wellness exam with a VCA Animal Hospital. For more information, call 602-997-7585 and ask for animal number 600709.
