Train strikes man who was lying on tracks

A Peoria man was pronounced dead Friday morning after being struck by a train in Glendale, police said.

Glendale police officers responded to reports just before 3:30 a.m. of a man lying unresponsive on train tracks near 6300 NW Grand Ave., officials said.

There, they found 31year-old Anthony Lee Delgadillo, who had been struck by the train, police said.

He was pronounced dead at the scene, Glendale police said.

Police determined the train was moving about 17 or 18 mph southeast bound when the engineer and conductor saw something lying across the tracks and not moving, which they “initially believed to be trash.”

The conductor blew the horn multiple times, but Delgadillo did not respond, according to police reports.

As they got closer, they determined Delgadillo was in fact a person and proceeded to “sound the horn and activate the emergency brakes”; however, the train was unable to stop in time, police said.

It is still unknown why Delgadillo was on the tracks, police said.

The investigation is ongoing.
