Monsoon season has finally begun. After Monday night’s wind, dust and rain, the National Weather Service had forecast there was a chance for a second round Tuesday night in Phoenix and for more this coming weekend.

There was another chance for monsoon thunderstorms to develop by Tuesday afternoon and evening, said Marvin Percha, a meteorologist for Phoenix National Weather Service.

Tuesday’s potential storm was expected to bring more rain than Monday night’s storm, with a lower chance of wind and significant dust, Percha added.

The National Weather Service issued a flash-flood watch Tuesday for parts of south-central and southeast Arizona starting about 3 p.m. and lasting until midnight, Phoenix National Weather Service tweeted.

Chances for a monsoon storm will dry up as temperatures rise toward 110 degrees today through Friday, Percha said.

Temperatures will start to drop off a bit over the weekend as storms are expected to roll back into the Valley, Percha added.

If you encounter a dust storm, be sure to “pull over and stay alive,” don’t attempt to cross running washes or flooded roadways, “turn around don’t drown,” Percha said.

As monsoon season starts to pick up, Phoenix has several weather hotlines available for individuals in need of help. A few of the hotlines include the nonemergency police assistance at 602-262-6151 and storm debris information can be reached at 602262-6251. The full list can be found at phoenix.gov/summer.
