White Castle, Kohl’s, others are hiring in metro Phoenix

- Russ Wiles

Many employers continue to look for staff in Arizona, with some already ramping up for the holiday shopping season.

The state’s unemployment rate at midyear stood at 4.9%, little changed from a year ago, with 80,000 new nonfarm jobs generated over the past 12 months. Most of that, 68,000 net new positions, came in the Phoenix metro area.

Here is a sampling of the employers looking to add staff:

White Castle arrives

Arizona’s first White Castle restaurant is looking to hire 130 people, including 10 in leadership positions, at wages starting at $13 an hour for team

members and $17 an hour for managers.

The new restaurant is located at 9310 E. Via de Ventura in the Talking Stick Entertainment District. The company will hold a hiring event Aug. 21 through Aug. 24, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., at the Hampton Inn Scottsdale Riverwalk, 9550 E. Talking Stick Way, with on-the-spot interviews and job offers.

White Castle seeks people to work cash registers, prepare food and oversee operations. Experience isn’t required. Those interested also can apply online at careers.whitecastle.com.

White Castle, a family owned business, employs 10,000 people across the nation. The company offers health and retirement benefits, profit sharing, flexible scheduling, holiday bonuses and free food during shifts.

Kohl’s seeking seasonal help

Kohl’s has announced hiring plans for the back-to-school and holiday seasons. The company is seeking to add employees across 500 stores nationally, nearly double the number of stores with early seasonal-hiring openings at this time last year.

Those 500 stores include three Valley sites — the company’s Desert Ridge location at 21001 N. Tatum Blvd. in Phoenix, the store at 17232 N. 19th Ave in north Phoenix and the store at 5408 W. Bell Rd. in Glendale.

Interested candidates can apply at KohlsCareers.com/ourJobs.

Also, job seekers can apply by texting APPLY to 24508 on their mobile phones.

Goodwill hiring managers

Goodwill of Central and Northern Arizona is holding hiring events for retail managers Aug. 16 and 17, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., at a Goodwill career center located at 106 E. McKellips Rd. in Mesa.

Applicants can line up interviews prior to the event by going to: https:// gwl-az.org/mgthiringevent.

Goodwill also has other job openings, which can be viewed at https:// jobs.goodwillaz.org/

The Phoenix nonprofit is hiring for positions including district manager, store manager, assistant manager and customer service manager. These positions are Valleywide, with pay ranging from $13.25 an hour to $67,500 annually.

Tech jobs feature high pay

A banking-technology startup company has moved to Scottsdale from Cleveland and expects to hire more than 200 individuals over the next three years in jobs that could average more than $150,000 in compensation.

Verdigris Holdings is seeking to serve millions of unbanked and underbanked consumers by providing lowcost financial products.

The company said it’s moving here because of the availability of qualified workers and a relaxed regulatory environment for innovation-focused companies.

Verdigris is seeking to fill positions in banking, technology, operations and senior leadership. More information is available at verdigrisholdings.com.
