Krzyzewski wins his 217th game with Duke at No. 1 in romp

No. 1 Duke 87, California 52: Mike Krzyzewski won his 217th game with Duke ranked No. 1, matching John Wooden for the career coaching record in the Blue Devils’ 87-52 romp over California on Thursday night at Madison Square Garden.

Krzyzewski is 217-34 when the Blue Devils hold the top spot, a mark they hit this week in The Associated Press poll. Wooden went 217-11 during his run at UCLA.

Krzyzewski can set the record Friday night at MSG if the Blue Devils (5-0) knock off Georgetown in the final of the 2K Empire Classic. The Hoyas defeated No. 22 Texas 82-66 in the opener.

Vernon Carey led Duke with 31 points and 12 rebounds. Carey scored 21 points in the first half, one point better than the best in his brief career, set a game earlier against Georgia State.

The Golden Bears (4-1) shot only 37% from the floor and failed to have a player score in double digits.

No. 12 Texas Tech 72, Tennessee St. 57: Davide Moretti scored 13 of his 19 points after halftime, including all four of his 3-pointers, and No. 12 Texas Tech finally pulled away for a 72-57 win over Tennessee State on Thursday night.

Freshmen Terrence Shannon Jr. and Jahmi’us Ramsey each scored 13 points for the Red Raiders (4-0).

Ravel Moody had 12 points to lead Tennessee State, which shot 35% (18 of 51). Wesley Harris and Shakem Johnson each scored 10 points.

No. 14 Arizona 71, South Dakota State 64: Josh Green scored 15 points, Nico Mannion added 14 and No. 14 Arizona pulled away in the final minutes to beat South Dakota State 71-64 on Thursday night.

Arizona (5-0) trailed for much of the first half and by three at halftime. The Wildcats finally pushed ahead 40-39 with 14:28 left when Green made a 15foot jumper.

South Dakota State (4-3) was led by Douglas Wilson’s 15 points.

No. 18 Xavier 73, Towson 51: Tyrique Jones had 12 points and 12 rebounds to lead No. 18 Xavier to a 73-51 victory over Towson on Thursday night in the Charleston Classic.

The Musketeers are 5-0 for the second time in three seasons and first time since 2018 when they won the Big East Conference regular-season title and earned a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament.

The Tigers (2-3) struggled against Xavier’s relentless pressure, turning the ball over on three straight positions.

No. 17 Villanova 98, Middle Tennessee State 69: Cole Swider scored a career-high 26 points with six 3-pointers, and No. 17 Villanova routed Middle Tennessee State 98-69 on Thursday in the quarterfin­als of the Myrtle Beach Invitation­al.

Collin Gillespie added 16 points and hit four 3s, Justin Moore finished with 15 points and Jeremiah Robinson-Earl had 11 rebounds to help the Wildcats (3-1) win their second straight following a 25-point loss at No. 10 Ohio State.

Donovan Sims scored 18 points and C.J. Jones had 16 for the Blue Raiders (3-2).

Georgetown 82, No. 22 Texas 66: Mac McClung scored 19 points to help give coach Patrick Ewing another signature moment at Madison Square Garden, leading Georgetown to an 8266 victory over No. 22 Texas on Thursday night.

Matt Coleman made all six 3-pointers and scored 22 points for the Longhorns (4-1).

No. 24 Baylor 76, Ohio 53: Jared Butler scored 19 points and No. 24 Baylor pulled away to beat Ohio 76-53 on Thursday in the Myrtle Beach Invitation­al quarterfin­als.

Lunden McDay scored 16 points and Jason Preston added 12 for the Bobcats.

Top 10 women

No. 2 Baylor 90, Lamar 28: Graduate transfer Erin DeGrate scored 19 points, NaLyssa Smith added 18 on 8of-8 shooting and Queen Egbo had another double-double as No. 2 and defending national champion Baylor won its 34th game in a row, 90-28 over Lamar on Thursday night.

No. 7 Oregon State 95, Southern Utah 45: Taylor Jones scored 18 points to help No. 7 Oregon State beat Southern Utah.

No. 5 South Carolina 112, S.C. Upstate 32: Freshman Aliyah Boston scored a career-high 18 points, Ty Harris also had 18 South Carolina routed South Carolina Upstate.

The Gamecocks (5-0) took a 27-2 lead before the Spartans (3-3) hit their first field goal. All 11 players on South Carolina’s roster saw action, and 10 scored. Six finished in double figures.

No. 8 Louisville 86, Chattanoog­a 37: Dana Evans scored 18 points and Louisville held Chattanoog­a to 24.6% shooting, forced 18 turnovers and outrebound­ing the Mocs 59-28.

Kylee Shook added 12 points and 11 rebounds, and freshman Norika Konno added a career-high 11 points for the Cardinals (4-0).

No. 10 Mississipp­i State 92, Jackson State 53: Jessika Carter had 21 points and eight rebounds to help No. 10 Mississipp­i State rout Jackson State.
