Winston leads Spartans to win over Wolverines

No. 14 Michigan State 87, No. 12 Michigan 69: Cassius Winston scored a career-high 32 points and Xavier Tillman fell one point short of his career high with 20, leading host Michigan State to a victory over Michigan on Sunday.

The Spartans (12-3, 4-0 Big Ten) were ahead the entire game, leading by as many as 13 points in the first half and earning a bigger cushion in the second, to beat their rivals for a fourth consecutiv­e time. Michigan State has won seven straight and is the only Big Ten team without a conference loss.

The Wolverines (10-4, 1-2) have lost four of their last seven games after starting 7-0 and going from unranked to No. 4 under first-year coach Juwan Howard.

The f ormer Fab Five star faced Michigan State for the first time as a coach after going 5-1 in the series as a player.

Howard became unhinged after not getting a call he wanted in the second half. He was called for a technical early in the half after leaving the sideline and going onto the court in protest.

Shortly thereafter, Michigan State coach Tom Izzo was also called for a technical foul in the highly charged game.

The Wolverines were missing forward Isaiah Livers, who was out for a second straight game with a groin injury. Livers is averaging 13.6 points per game and is the team’s top 3-point shooter.

Brandon Johns replaced Livers in the starting lineup and matched a career high with 12 points.

Michigan center Jon Teske fouled out after scoring four of his 15 points in the second half. Zavier Simpson had 14 points and eight assists while Franz Wagner added 10 points for the Wolverines.

No. 20 Dayton 80, Saint Joseph’s 67: Trey Landers and Ryan Mikesell each scored 18 points as Dayton (11-3, 2-0 Atlantic 10) fought off some sluggishne­ss and pulled away for a win over Saint Joseph’s (3-11, 0-2) in Philadelph­ia.

Ibit Watson and Obi Toppin added 15 points apiece and Jalen Crutcher scored 10 for the Flyers.

Ryan Daly scored 22 points to lead Saint Joseph’s. Cameron Brown scored 16 and Myles Douglas had 15.

Women’s Top 10

No. 1 UConn 80 SMU 42: Christyn Williams scored 21 points and Megan Walker added 15 as top-ranked UConn eased past SMU 80-42 on Sunday to remain undefeated heading into Thursday’s showdown against No. 6 Baylor.

The Huskies (12-0, 3-0 American) never trailed and led by as many as 40 points.

No. 2 Oregon 88, Utah 51: Sabrina Ionescu scored 17 points to go with eight rebounds and seven assists in leading host Oregon in an rout of Utah.

Ruthy Hebard had the 46th doubledoub­le of her career with 13 points and 12 rebounds, and Minyon Moore added 15 points as the Ducks (12-1, 2-0) never trailed in handing Utah (7-7, 0-3) its worst Pac-12 defeat, in its ninth year in the conference.

No. 3 Oregon State, 72 Colorado 60:

Mikayla Pivec had 16 points, 15 rebounds and eight assists to lead hosr Oregon State to a victory over Colorado.

No. 4 South Carolina 93, Alabama 78: Aliyah Boston had 17 points and 12 rebounds to lead visiting South Carolina to a win over Alabama.

No. 5 Stanford 77, Washington 56:

Kiana Williams keyed a decisive stretch late in the third quarter with three quick baskets to finish with 20 points and nine assists, leading host Stanford 13-1, 2-0 Pac-12) to a win against Washington (10-4, 2-1).

No. 7 Louisville 60, Duke 55: Dana Evans hit a go-ahead 3-pointer with 28.1 seconds remaining and Bionca Dunham hit two free throws with 16 seconds left to help host Louisville beat Duke.

No. 8 Florida State, 73 No. 23 Miami 62: Kiah Gillespie scored 21 points to lead visiting Florida State to a victory over Miami.

No. 9 N.C. State 80, Virginia 60: Elissa Cunane had 26 points and 10 rebounds, and visiting North Carolina State beat Virginia.
