2 cops injured, gunman dead at Ark. store

FORREST CITY, Ark. – Two police officers were injured and a suspect killed Monday during an active shooter incident at a Walmart Supercente­r in Forrest City, Arkansas, authoritie­s said.

Arkansas state police said two officers with the Forrest City Police Department were injured during the shooting.

Forrest City Police Chief Deon Lee identified the injured officers as Lt. Eric Varner and Detective Eugene Watlington.

Both are assigned to the criminal investigat­ion department and neither was wearing a bullet-resistant vest, Lee said.

Arkansas State Police Spokesman Bill Sadler said local authoritie­s have identified the suspect as Bobby Joe Gibbs, 40, of Forrest City, though the state crime lab had not yet confirmed his identity Monday night.

Forrest City dispatcher­s confirmed around 11:40 a.m. local time that the incident was over.

Walmart spokesman Scott Pope said the company was helping with the police investigat­ion.
