The organizers of the Charles Schwab Cup Championship hosted an event on Monday at Phoenix Country Club to thank sponsors of the tournament for their support and relive an iconic moment from last year’s event in Phoenix.

The tournament’s defending champion, Jeff Maggert, was on hand, where he talked about an eagle he scored last year that sealed his win, as well as the tournament itself.

Maggert said it was nice to come back and show appreciation to the people who helped make the tournament run smoothly.

“We get spoiled rotten,” Maggert said. “We get free buffets and it’s in and out and and then you forget like someone had to make all that happen. And so it’s nice to come back and realize who’s really making all this stuff work.”

The Charles Schwab Cup Championship takes place at Phoenix Country Club in the fall and is the final points event of the PGA Champions Tour schedule, meaning both the overall Charles Schwab points champion and the event champion are crowned at the end of the tournament.

Last November, Scott McCarron took home the overall Charles Schwab Cup championship after Maggert’s 123yard shot from the fairway on hole No. 17 helped Maggert defeat Retief Goosen for the tournament win, his first since 2015.

On Monday, those in attendance were given the opportunity to attempt the same shot Maggert hit in the playoff last year, have a three-course meal, listen to a question and answer session with Maggert and take pictures with him after the event.

McCarron was unable to attend Monday’s dinner due to an illness but did send a case of wine to Maggert to thank him for helping him win the points championship.

“It’s our way to say thank you to our sponsors throughout the year,” tournament director Tiffany Nelson said. “You go through tournament week and there it is. And then you’re done until next year. We want to continue keeping Charles Schwab Cup Championship in the forefront of everybody’s mind.”

The tournament distributed money to charity, presenting a check of $2,500 to Elevate Phoenix after one of the attendees affiliated with the organization was closest to the pin on 17 when attempting Maggert’s shot.

The tournament also gave out $14,205 to the Phoenix Country Club Foundation.

The Phoenix event isn’t the only Arizona tournament on the Champions Tour, which features golfers 50 and over.

The Cologuard Classic Champions Tour event is being held in Tucson this weekend.

As for the 2020 tournament, Nelson said to expect expansions to the Cold Beers and Cheeseburgers lounge on hole No. 12. The event will take place Nov. 2-8, 2020.
