Gigi is excited to be her new owner’s best friend

Every year, approximately 6.5 million companion animals enter shelters nationwide, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Of those, about 3.3 million are dogs and 3.2 million are cats.

Each week, The Arizona Republic highlights a handful of the many pets up for adoption at Valley shelters. To check the status of a specific animal, please contact the shelter directly.

It truly takes a village to save homeless pets. For the Arizona Humane Society, that village is all-encompassing from donors to adopters and so many others who work together for the cause. One of the most pivotal aspects of saving as many lives as possible comes from collaborating with other rescues and shelters to not only share innovative practices and ideas but to also instill programs that help one another.

This is exactly what happened for Gigi, a sweet 6-year-old Chinese sharpei mix who was brought to AHS through a lifesaving, collaborative program in May. Although she is healthy, this cute girl was found to have a little mass on one of her toes that will need to be kept an eye on but does not bother her or cause any irritation.

Gigi is a loving and outgoing girl who loves people more than anything in this world. Even though she is a fan of booty scratches, hot dogs, playing with her toys and long walks (when it’s cool out), this pup has shown that hanging out with her favorite humans is on the top of her to-do list. Because she loves her people so much, she would prefer to be the center of attention in the home as the only pupper child.

How to adopt: The Arizona Humane Society’s adoption locations remain closed as the shelter continues to heal and rehabilitate pets coming in, but its Virtual Matchmaking Adoptions by appointment is available. Interested adopters can view available pets, like Gigi, and schedule an appointment online at azhumane.org/adopt.
