Chandler, Hamilton basketball teams in quarantine

- Richard Obert

The morning after rivals Chandler and Hamilton played in a boys basketball game, both teams had to go into COVID-19 quarantine.

Both teams will be in quarantine for 10 days with no basketball activities.

“We were informed of a positive COVID test,” Chandler Athletic Director Jim Culver said in an email. “In accordance with the CUSD (Chandler Unified School District, Maricopa County and the state of Arizona guidelines, we will be pausing all basketball activities for 10 days.”

Chandler was a preseason top 10 team by The Arizona Republic.

It went 2-2 in the opening week and lost to Hamilton 56-33 on Tuesday night without its best player, senior point guard Carson Kelly, who has not played since the second game of the season when he suffered a head injury in the fourth quarter of a 63-62 win over Valley Vista.

Chandler will have to cancel or reschedule its next three games against Phoenix Brophy Prep, Yuma Kofa and Chandler Basha.

Hamilton Athletic Director Brett Palmer confirmed in an email that his team is in quarantine, as well.

“Hamilton basketball program has been notified of a positive case and are currently quarantined until further notice,” Palmer wrote.

Hamilton was scheduled to play four games during its quarantine period with games slated against Sandra Day O’Connor and Yuma Kofa this week and Basha and Gilbert Perry next week.

Last week, both Phoenix Sunnyslope and Phoenix Thunderbird had to go into quarantine over COVID-19 issues after playing only one game.
