A huge winter storm marching across the south-central United States has closed several airports, canceling and delaying flights nationwide.

By 11 a.m. Arizona time on Feb. 15, Sky Harbor Airport reported 38 delays and 78 cancellations, mostly to Texas destinations including San Antonio, Dallas, Houston and Austin.

As of noon Feb. 15, the Federal Aviation Administration’s flight delay website showed these airports closed due to snow and ice from winter storm Uri:

● Baton Rouge Metropolitan Airport in Louisiana is expected to reopen at noon CST on Feb. 16.

● William P. Hobby Airport in Houston is expected to reopen at noon CST on Feb. 16.

● George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston is expected to reopen at 1 p.m. CST on Feb. 16.

● Lafayette Regional Airport in Louisiana is expected to reopen at 5 p.m. CST on Feb. 16.

● Jackson International Airport in Mississippi is expected to reopen at 11 p.m. CST on Feb 16.

The FAA also said snow and ice were causing delays averaging one hour at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport.

As a result, flight tracking website FlightAware’s Misery Map showed cancellations hitting Houston and Dallas the hardest, with delays at those hub airports causing a ripple effect nationwide.

The storm hit just as air traffic had increased for the long Presidents’ Day weekend, which also included Valentine’s Day.

The Transportation Security Administration reported screening 946,458 passengers nationwide on Feb. 14.

That’s up from 854,636 screened on Feb. 7 but down from 2.2 million on Feb. 14, 2020.
