Airline offering $19 flights

- Melissa Yeager

Avelo Airlines, a low-cost carrier from an Allegiant Air co-founder, launches April 28. It will offer flights May 3 out of Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport.

A new airline created by the co-founder and former president of Allegiant Air is coming to cities in the western United States and the low-cost carrier will include Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport as one of the inaugural destinations in its network.

Founded by former Allegiant President Andrew Levy, Avelo Airlines will be based in Burbank, California, and start service on April 28.

The airline will provide daily flights between Mesa-Gateway and Burbank starting May 3.

“After more than 20 years of steadily shrinking consumer choice, the American flying public wants and deserves more options and lower fares,” Levy said in a press release. “Avelo offers both — along with a refreshingly smooth and convenient experience.”

Avelo Airlines in metro Phoenix

Avelo joins Allegiant, WestJet and Swoop airlines at the east Mesa airport, primarily attracting leisure travelers looking for inexpensive nonstop flights to destinations not typically serviced by airlines at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.

“Today’s new nonstop service announcement by Avelo Airlines is exciting news for both greater Phoenix and Los Angeles area air travelers” Brian O’Neill, Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport Authority executive director, said in a statement to The Republic.

“This new service provides highquality, ultra-low-fare connectivity between two major markets in the West. I am confident that Avelo will be very successful at Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport.”

The airline operates Boeing 737-800 aircraft and will use an “unbundled” fare model similar to Allegiant, Spirit and Frontier airlines. You’ll pay extra for things like seat assignments, priority boarding and checked bags.

The airline says your first checked bag will cost $10, priority boarding is $10 and seat assignments start at $5. There’s a $35 charge for carry-on bags, but one item no larger than 14 by 9 by 9.5 inches that can fit under the seat in front of you is free.

Avelo is running an introductory sale of $19 one-way fares on all routes. Flights begin April 28 and the schedule is open through Sept. 15.

Blackout dates are May 28-31 for Memorial Day weekend.

Tickets are on sale on Avelo’s website, aveloair.com.
