- Richard Obert

Phoenix Desert Vista has parted ways with baseball coach Cody Brassfield, who led the Thunder to a 4-16 record this past season.

Two years ago, the Thunder won 19 games under Brassfield, helping the team get into the fourth round of the double-elimination 6A tournament, before being eliminated by Tempe Corona del Sol 4-2.

His 2018 team won 20 games, losing to Phoenix Sandra Day O’Connor in the playoffs.

Brassfield declined to offer any immediate comment on Wednesday.

New Athletic Director David Klecka emailed the Republic: “After careful evaluation of our Desert Vista Baseball Program, a decision has been made to move in a new direction regarding our head coach.”

“I want to thank Coach Cody Brassfield for his efforts and hard work,” Klecka continued. “He has led the program with integrity.

“We will immediately start the process of finding the next head baseball coach for Desert Vista High School.”

Brassfield led the program since 2017, taking it over from Stan Luketich, who had been the school’s only head baseball coach since the school’s opening in the late 1990s.
