Globe police arrest man they allege fired gun at officers
Globe police arrested a man on Friday afternoon after he was accused of shooting at officers, one of whom was sent to the hospital in stable condition, according to the Gila County Sheriff’s Office.
Police responded to a 911 call of a man threatening law enforcement authorities at about 5 p.m.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, the caller said the man was intoxicated and armed with a handgun, claiming that he wanted to shoot an officer. The suspect was identified as 30-year-old Perry Roy Tonto of San Carlos, Arizona.
The caller reported dropping off the man near a McDonald’s. When officers arrived at the restaurant, they did not find the suspect.
Several minutes later, police received a second call from a nearby resident claiming a man armed with a handgun was trespassing in his backyard.
Globe police officers and a sheriff’s deputy located the man in an empty lot in the area, hiding behind storage cabinets. According to the Sheriff ’s Office, the man started shooting at officers.
The law enforcement personnel and the man engaged in a shootout that left the suspect and a police officer injured. Both men were taken to the hospital for medical treatment.
The Sheriff ’s Office said the suspect, after being released from the hospital, was then arrested on charges of attempted homicide of a law enforcement officer, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, endangerment and prohibited possession of a weapon.
The Arizona Department of Public Safety said further investigations were being conducted.
