Lawrence throws 2 TDs as Jags beat Cowboys

-

ARLINGTON, Texas – Trevor Lawrence took the reps coach Urban Meyer said he needed, and now has a taste of success going into the regular season.

Jacksonville’s rookie No. 1 overall pick completed 11 of 12 passes for 139 yards and two scores in three possessions against Dallas backups, and the Jaguars beat the Cowboys 34-14 in a preseason finale Sunday.

The former Clemson star had just one field goal to show for eight drives in his first two exhibition games. Lawrence changed that quickly four days after Meyer named him the starter, and a day after the Jaguars traded likely backup and fan favorite Gardner Minshew. Pharoh Cooper caught Lawrence’s first TD toss on the opening possession for Jacksonville (1-2), an 18-yarder on the sideline in the end zone that was set up by a 38yard toe-dragging catch from Phillip Dorsett II.

49ers 34, Raiders 10: The San Francisco 49ers showed off their two-quarterback system by getting rushing touchdowns from both Jimmy Garoppolo and Trey Lance in a 34-10 exhibition victory over the visiting Las Vegas Raiders.

Coach Kyle Shanahan rotated his two quarterbacks on the first two drives against the Raiders backups as a tune-up for the regular season when he plans to use both Garoppolo and the rookie Lance.

Dolphins 29, Bengals 26: Nine months after tearing both the ACL and MCL in his left knee, Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow took his first snaps against the Miami Dolphins, who rallied to win 29-26 in a wild preseason finale in Cincinnati.

In the fourth quarter, Reid Sinnett tossed a 43-yard TD pass to Kirk Merritt. Then with 1:21 left, he scrambled on fourth-and-15 and found a leaping Chris Myarick in the corner of the end zone for a 34-yard TD to put the Dolphins ahead.

Burrow, the overall No. 1 pick in the 2020 draft, was greeted by a standing ovation and chants of “Joey, Joey” when he came out for the Bengals’ first offensive series.

Patriots 22, Giants 20: Mac Jones threw a touchdown pass and led three scoring drives and New England capped a perfect preseason with a victory over winless New York.

The Giants had a chance to tie the game in the waning seconds when backup Mike Glennon threw his second touchdown of the game, a 43-yard to Damion Willis with 8 seconds to play. A potential tying 2-point pass play from Glennon to Dante Pettis fell incomplete.

Browns 19, Falcons 10: Baker Mayfield led a pair of impressive drives in his first appearance of the preseason, capping the second with a 22-yard touchdown pass to KhaDarel Hodge, and Cleveland held on to beat host Atlanta.

Mayfield was 6 of 10 for 113 yards in the NFL’s final game of the preseason. Teams must get down to the 53man roster limit for the regular season by Tuesday.
