Phoenix-based Peter Piper Pizza donated $5,000 to the Phoenix Children’s Hospital on Monday to purchase books that will be available for children, family members and friends.

According to Alissa Parten, corporate development officer with the Phoenix Children’s Hospital, the money will allow the hospital to buy around 500 books that will be used in the hospital’s school program and the Emily Center Health Library.

According to Parten, these books will not only support the children at the hospital to continue their education but will also provide families with accurate and easy-to-understand information about their children's condition.

“If you’re a 4-year-old who has a disease, or maybe you have a sibling who has a disease… and you want to know what it is, there are books there that explain with pictures what is happening in a way that is easy for a 4-year-old to understand,” Parten said.

Genaro Pérez, vice president of marketing with Peter Piper Pizza, said the company has been committed to fostering education in Phoenix.

“When we learned that the hospital actually has a center that is geared towards families and kids to be able to continue in school and learning while at the hospital, we thought it was fantastic,” he said.

Parten said the hospital was in need of funding since the hospital allows parents and patients to keep the books that they want for free.

“You cannot imagine how many books are taken every day,” she said. “Once someone comes and grabs a book, it is theirs forever. This is why we’re in a constant need of book funds.”

The books purchased with the donation will cover a wide range of subjects and be apt for all ages, Parten said.

Pérez said that through the donation the company hopes to offer hope to families and provide children with the tools to grow with the education they need and "become better adults."

“We hope that some of those children will soon be able to come to Peter Piper Pizza and have a good time with their families,” Pérez said.

Parten said she feels thankful to have been able to connect with the company and obtain the resources to offer children and families the means to navigate through the challenges they face.
