– November 24, 1936 – March 9, 2022 Bobbie “Bob” Joe McLendon, age 85, of Yuma, AZ passed away at his home on Wednesday, March 9, 2022. Bob was born November 24, 1936 in Rodney, TX.

Bob is survived by his wife, Sandra Faye McLendon; his daughter Bobbie Jo Coxon of Phoenix, AZ; and his brother Jim McLendon of Phoenix, AZ; and his sister-in-law, Sharon Alexander, and many nieces and nephews. Bob is also survived by three Grandchild­ren; Andrew, T.J. and Robert Coxon.

Bob has had quite a life while here. He was a teacher and basketball coach at Yuma High for many years, and was inducted into the Northern Arizona University Hall of Fame for Education. Upon retiring from coaching, Bob was elected to the Arizona House of Representa­tives, where he served from 1982 to 2000.

While in the Legislatur­e, Bob served as Democratic Leader, Minority Leader, and was a member of many House Committees. Some of his accomplish­ments while in the Legislatur­e include playing a major role in securing funding for the establishm­ent of NAU-Yuma, securing funding to open the Children’s Rehabilita­tion Services Clinic in Yuma, and, securing funding to establish a Bone Marrow Transplant Unit at the School of Medicine. As Democratic Leader of the House, Bob also worked for the successful passage of Propositio­n 301 in 2000.

After leaving the State Legislatur­e, Bob was elected to the Yuma County Board of Supervisor­s, where he served from 2000 to 2004. In 2008, Bob was appointed by then Governor Janet Napalitano to the Arizona State Board of Regents, where he served from 2008 to 2012.

Bob was also very active in the Yuma community, having served on many Boards of Directors, and profession­al organizati­ons. He won the distinctio­n of being Yuma Countys Citizen of the Year in 2004. Bob dedicated his life to his community and helping others.

On Monday March 14, 2022 Govenor Doug Ducey ordered flags to be flown half mass in Bob’s honor. There will be a Celebratio­n of Bob’s Life at a later date.
