Reports: Saints re-sign Winston

-

After exploring an alternative route, the New Orleans Saints are turning back to Jameis Winston as their starting quarterback.

Winston agreed Monday to a twoyear, $28 million contract with the Saints, according to multiple reports. The deal includes $21 million guaranteed, per reports.

Winston, 28, started seven games for the Saints in 2021, a season in which he took over as the successor to Drew Brees, before suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament on Oct. 31.

He threw for 1,170 yards and 14 touchdowns with three interceptions while leading New Orleans to a 5-2 record.

The Saints were one of four teams that met with quarterback Deshaun Watson last weekend in pursuit of the three-time Pro Bowl selection.

Watson was believed to be down to the Saints and Atlanta Falcons in his decision to waive his no-trade clause from the Houston Texans, but he reversed course last Friday and chose the Cleveland Browns.

Winston will serve as an additional link between in the Saints’ transition from former coach Sean Payton, who stepped down in January, to new coach Dennis Allen.
