Diamondbacks 9, Mariners 1
At Salt River Fields
At the plate: RF Jordan Luplow connected for a two-run home run in the first inning off Mariners RHP George Kirby, a 97 mph fastball on a 2-2 count that Luplow slashed to the opposite field in right. LF David Peralta also homered, his second in as many Cactus League games. He blasted a 95 mph fastball out to left-center field. “Just good approaches,” manager Torey Lovullo said. “When you see an opposite-field home run with a little bit of backspin carry, your swing plane is in a good spot. We saw a lot of really good approaches where we drove the baseball to the opposite field and really good approaches that equaled base hits the opposite way.” 2B Buddy Kennedy added a homer in the seventh, a three-run shot to left-center field.
On the mound: RHP Mark Melancon made his first appearance of the spring, giving up one run on one hit and a walk in two-thirds of an inning. RHP Luis
Frias turned in two scoreless innings in relief, striking out three, including Mariners phenom CF Julio Rodriguez. RHP Humberto Castellanos started and turned in three solid innings, allowing three hits, walking none and striking out two.
Extra bases: 2B Josh VanMeter clanked a ground ball in the fourth, two innings after he started a key double play to help Castellanos escape a jam. Peralta also committed an error in the fourth, failing to pick up a single to left cleanly and allowing 3B Abraham Toro to take second. The Diamondbacks also misplayed a popup down the left field line. “There’s some things we need to work on,” Lovullo said. “We will.”
Tuesday’s game: Diamondbacks LHP Madison Bumgarner vs. Rangers LHP Kolby Allard, 1:10 p.m., Salt River Fields.
