Cubs 3, Diamondbacks 2

- At Sloan Park

At the plate: SS Sergio Alcantara saw his first action with the Diamondbacks since they reacquired him from the Chicago Cubs in a minor trade on Sunday. He entered the game as a defensive replacement in the seventh inning and went 0 for 1. Alcantara, who gives the Diamondbacks additional infield coverage at a time when SS Nick Ahmed’s health is uncertain, was traded by GM Mike Hazen to the Detroit Tigers as part of the RF J.D. Martinez trade in 2017. “I went up to him the other day and said, ‘Well, I traded you once, but I traded back for you. I hope we’re even now,’” Hazen said. DH Jake McCarthy had a productive day at the plate, collecting two singles and a walk in four trips to the plate.

On the mound: RHP Zach Davies gave up three runs in three innings in his Cactus League debut, saying he felt comfortable with all of his pitches — a good sign given his short build-up in spring training. In normal springs, he said he might work on specific pitches in specific counts before moving on to another aspect of the game. This spring is different. “This is kind of just all at once — throw the kitchen sink at them, get comfortable with whoever is behind the plate and with facing big-league hitters,” he said. He gave up a pair of home runs, one to C Willson Contreras, the other to SS Ildemaro Vargas. He did not consider them bad pitches. “You tip your hat and you move on,” Davies said.

Extra bases: 2B Ketel Marte, who had two hits on the day his contract extension was announced, lost his left shoe while going first to third on a single in the fifth inning. He hesitated but still managed to slide in safely. Earlier in the game, McCarthy was not so fortunate. He hesitated off third base on a pitch in the dirt before breaking for home and was tagged out when Contreras recovered the ball and fed LHP Justin Steele, who was covering the plate.
