Tucson reaches 100 degrees; will Phoenix follow suit soon?
The state has done it, and hit its first 100 degree day. The National Weather Service in Tucson announced in a tweet that the Tucson Airport reached 100 degrees about noon Tuesday, setting a new record high for April 26 and welcoming the first 100 degree day of 2022 for the Tucson area.
Arizonans had been waiting for 100 degrees to hit, with rising temperatures forecast for this week across the state that called for Tuesday having the highest chance of hitting the 100 degree mark in the Phoenix area.
It’s still possible for Phoenix to match Tucson and hit 100 degrees. There is still about a 25 percent chance for the temperature to rise Tuesday, according to weather service meteorologist Marvin Percha. If it is not reached, the weather service does not forecast temperatures reaching the mark until May.
When does Tucson usually hit 100 degrees?
The Tucson area usually has a lower average temperature over the course of the year than Phoenix due to a number of reasons, but it’s not uncommon for the city to reach the 100 degree milestone before Phoenix.
According to weather service meteorologist Kevin Strongman, the average first day to reach 100 degrees in Tucson is not until May 25.
When does Phoenix usually hit triple digit temperatures?
So far this year for Phoenix, only one day has reached within one degree of 100.
The first day to hit triple digit temperatures does not typically occur until the first week of May. However, it is not out of the ordinary for it to happen within the month of April, said weather service meteorologist Matthew Hirsch.
