Come on Arizonans, we need to give our Phoenix Suns a lift

- Joe Zanzucchi, Phoenix Jeff Eger, Mesa

I have been a loyal reader of The Arizona Republic since 1975, but when I was reading my newspaper this Sunday I asked myself, “Where is all the positive hype about our team?”

The Phoenix Suns were the winningest team this season and are in the playoffs again, competing to get to the finals.

They were just two games away from winning The Larry O’Brien Trophy last season. Where is all the support in our newspaper. Instead I have to read about an overaged looking hippy who is a real estate investor and a super fan watching

NBA games.

The author states he is a jinx for the Suns when he attends Sun’s games, even though he is a Clipper’s fan, so he is helping the Dallas Mavericks win, if you are superstitious?

I grew up in a small steel mill town, 20 miles outside of Pittsburgh. In the 1960 World Series the lowly rated Pirates were up against the mighty Yankees of Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra, Roger Maris and Whitey Ford.

However, the Pittsburgh Press writers wrote every article positively about our “Beat Em Bucs.”

Same thing when the lowly Steelers built the “Steel Curtain” with Mean Joe Green and later Terry Bradshaw to lead the offense to Super Bowls in the 1970s.

If any Pittsburgh writer wrote any article about nonsupport or little or no hope of the home team, the fans and Pittsburghers would be up in arms.

Let’s see “Go Suns” signs in Phoenix businesses, homes and on cars or buses. I hope our local newspaper columnists become homers and support, our home sports teams ,in the hunt to get to the world championship.
