Jacks end season with another last-minute defeat

- Staff Reports

After a 39-yard Collin Robbins field goal with minutes left, Northern Arizona must’ve felt a moment of redemption in their grasp.

The score gave the Lumberjacks a 1point lead over Weber State with 2:50 left, in a game in which they had rallied from a 14-point deficit, in a season in which have required rallies only to fall short time and again.

But the Wildcats, just like Northern Colorado and Montana State in previous weeks, found a way through NAU’s resolve.

Kyle Thompson’s 23-yard field goal with five seconds remaining capped 12play, 2-minute and 37 second drive, giving WSU a 33-31 victory over the Jacks on NAU’s senior day Saturday at Findlay Toyota Field in Flagstaff.

NAU ends the season 3-8.

It was a big day for NAU quarterback R.J. Martinez and his receivers. Martinez finish 31-43 with 280 yards passing and 3 touchdowns. The bl of that went to Hendrix Johnson and Coleman Owen, who combined for 223 yards receiving.

Johnson added two touchdowns receptions.

For Martinez, the sophomore from Austin, Texas, finished the season with a strong 2,870 passing yards and 16 touchdowns. With receivers Johnson and Owen having eligibility remaining, the Jacks appear to have a potent passing game to build on for the 2023 season.
