No. 1 Pima downs No. 2 Morenci to win 2A state football title
Top-ranked Pima defeated No. 2 Morenci, 50-19 in the Arizona 2A football championship, in a game played in Safford on Saturday night.
Pima finished its regular season 9-1, with its only loss coming to 3A Thatcher, which played in that conference’s title game, losing to Eastmark on Saturday.
Morenci also finished 9-1, with only regular season loss coming to Pima, a much closer contest at 21-20 between the two eastern Arizona schools.
Pima, which favored a pass-oriented offense, finished No. 1 in the 2A rankings by the Arizona Interscholastic Association and Morenci No. 2.
The title for Pima marked the 10th football championship in program history, and 19th appearance in the title game, according to the AIA.
Only Blue Ridge and Saguaro have won more, according to the AIA.
