At the plate: 3B Emmanuel Rivera had two hits, including a game-tying, two-run double to left in the seventh inning. Rivera is 4 for 9 with a double, a homer and seven RBIs this spring. CF Alek Thomas doubled to left for an RBI in the third, then dumped a single to center for another run-scoring hit in the seventh. LF Corbin Carroll lined a ball into the alley in right-center field in the fifth, then raced around the bases for a triple. He also drew a walk in the seventh. 2B Buddy Kennedy had two hits, singling in the third and doubling to deep center in the seventh.

On the mound: Despite posting another uneven performance based on the pitching line, RHP Ryne Nelson sounded as if he came away from his outing encouraged by the way he threw. Nelson, who gave up three runs on four hits and two walks in 1 2/3 innings, was able to see the positives. “Definitely, the stats don’t look great, but they don’t show how good I feel with the ball right now,” Nelson said. “I feel like it’s coming out good. I feel like the shape of my pitches is really good. I’m trying not to read into the numbers and stuff too much, but I definitely do want to throw some zeros up and keep some guys from scoring.”

Extra bases: Nelson was frustrated with a throw he made to the wrong side of the bag on a potential double-play ball in the first inning. Kennedy was charged with the error, but Nelson blamed himself. “That’s a play I need to make a better throw on,” he said. “That pitch would have ended the inning. It would have been a double play.” McCarthy made a nice running grab near the wall on a drive off LF David Peralta’s bat in the second. Regarding Peralta, manager Torey Lovullo said before the game he was looking forward to seeing the former Diamondbacks outfielder. “He was a fixture here in this organization,” Lovullo said.
