Rahm sets mark for most money earned in PGA Tour season
There’s a new benchmark for most money won in a single season on the PGA Tour. And the calendar just flipped to May.
Jon Rahm finished solo second at the 2023 Mexico Open at Vidanta on Sunday, falling short of defending his title but still good enough to earn $839,300 for his efforts. That brings his 2022-23 season total to $14,462,840, surpassing the $14,046,910 that Scottie Scheffler earned last season.
Rahm has four victories this season, with two of them coming in designated events.
He banked $2.7 million at the Sentry Tournament of Champions and $3.6 million for winning the Genesis Invitational.
His Masters victory brought home another $3.24 million. Rahm has opted out of this week’s Wells Fargo Championship, but he will likely have nine or 10 more events this season to really run his total out there.
In his career, Rahm is now at $49,486,883, on the doorstep of surpassing the $50 million mark.
ASU men 2nd, UA 7th at Pac-12s
Arizona State led by 11 shots after the first day of the 2023 Pac-12 Men's Golf Championship but couldn't maintain the pace as host Stanford won the conference title. ASU finished in second at 6 under, 13 shots behind Stanford. Colorado and Washington State (5 under) tied for third. Washington and Oregon (3 under) tied for fifth.
The Cardinal's Michael Thorbjornsen made it a sweep for Stanford after claiming medalist honors on Sunday at Stanford Golf Course.
The other six teams finished above par, including Arizona at 14 over. The Wildcats finished in solo seventh. ASU's highest individual finisher was Preston Summerhays, who tied for 12th. Arizona's best finisher was Chase Sienkiewicz, who tied for eighth.
GCU men win first WAC golf title
After finishing second two other times, Grand Canyon finally broke through Sunday with its first WAC Men's Golf Championship. GCU was tied for second with New Mexico State after two days but surged to the title Sunday at Boulder Creek Golf Club in
Boulder City, Nevada. GCU finished at 34 under, five shots ahead of NMSU. The Antelopes tied the tournament's 54hole scoring record, 830.
GCU fifth-year senior Parker Reddig shot a final-round 66 that included six birdies, including four on the back nine to lead the Lopes. Reddig finished the tournament in fourth place at 10 under. Sam Murphy, Matthew Braley, Nicky Kling all broke par on Sunday, and junior Tommaso Zorzetto provided some much needed momentum with a 10-foot eagle putt on No. 5 to bring GCU back into a tie with New Mexico State, setting the stage for the Lopes' strong finish.
With the win, GCU earned an automatic bid to the NCAA postseason. Regional selections for the 2023 NCAA Division I men's golf championship, to be held at Grayhawk in Scottsdale for a third and final time later this month, will be announced on Golf Channel at 10 a.m. Wednesday. ASU, ranked second in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin rankings, and Arizona, which is 18th, will await their selection fate but both are in good position to be among the 81 teams chosen for the six NCAA regionals.
Junior event accepting entries
The 2023 Golfweek Southwest Junior Open is accepting entries for the tournament later this month. The event is for boys and girls junior golfers ages 13 to 19 who are not yet attending college. The tournament will be held May 27-28 at Southern Dunes Golf Club in Maricopa. The top finishers in each division will be exempt into the USA Today Sports/Golfweek International Junior Invitational to be held in November in Florida. Information: rgaines @golfweek.com.
