- Arizona Republic USA TODAY NETWORK Kelsey Humane Society Arizona

Every year, approximately 6.5 million companion animals enter shelters nationwide, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Of those, about 3.3 million are dogs and 3.2 million are cats.

Each week, The Arizona Republic highlights a handful of the many pets up for adoption at Valley shelters. To check the status of a specific animal, please contact the shelter directly.

An adorable bundle of wrinkles

An absolute potato of a puppy, Tamale is sure to be everyone’s favorite bundle of wrinkles! The 16-week-old American pit

Bull Terrier mix not only has the sweetest disposition, she also has the sweetest expression that is sure to let her get her way with anything she wants!

Tamale and her litter were rescued by an Arizona Humane Society Emergency Animal Medical Technician in early May after they were found as stray puppies wandering the streets of Phoenix. Noted to have diarrhea, AHS tested them for parvo and luckily found they were negative; however, Tamale did have a bit of a puppy cold that needed treatment.

After about a month in a loving Foster Hero home receiving medical treatment and learning the ins and outs of the good life off of the streets, Tamale is now in search of her forever home. Those who know this cute pup say she is loving and playful!

How to adopt: As the Arizona Humane Society continues to struggle with capacity issues throughout its shelter, AHS is offering a “Choose Your Adoption Fee” special for all dogs, including puppies, through July 4. When adopting from AHS, you are not only saving the life of that pet but creating much-needed kennel space for the shelter to continue bringing in and saving even more sick, injured and abused pets.

Interested adopters can meet the tremendous Tamale at the Arizona Humane Society’s PetSmart Scottsdale location. Her adoption fee includes her spay surgery, current vaccinations, a microchip, and a follow-up wellness exam with a VCA Animal Hospital
