Asante and more pets up for adoption

- — Jannelle Cosgriff, Friends for Life

Every year, approximately 6.5 million companion animals enter shelters nationwide, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Of those, about 3.3 million are dogs and 3.2 million are cats.

Each week, The Arizona Republic highlights a handful of the many pets up for adoption at Valley shelters. To check the status of a specific animal, please contact the shelter directly.

Asante: A former adoptee looking for another chance

Asante is almost 2 years old and a handsome orange tabby. He had been adopted from Sun Cities 4 Paws Rescue as a kitten and was recently found in someone’s backyard. Fortunately, he was microchipped so the finder returned him to 4 Paws. Efforts to contact the owner were unsuccessful, so here he is again for a second chance. This kitty is very friendly and loves attention. He doesn’t seem to like other cats. Asante doesn’t mind being picked up but is not a fan of being brushed. He especially loves to chase after laser lights.

How to adopt: He’d love to have a visit from you at 11129 Michigan Ave., Youngtown. Call 623-876-8778 Tuesdays-Saturdays from 10-3 p.m. Other choices may be seen at the shelter, 10807 N. 96th Ave., Peoria, 623-7732246, same days and hours, and the Surprise PetSmart, 13764 Bell Road.

Anika: An agile girl who loves to play

Anika is a 2-year-old, 22-pound mixed-breed girl who joined Friends for Life Animal Rescue recently by way of a county facility. This small girl has a beautiful coat. She loves to go for walks/hikes and is leash trained. She knows the command for sit and also will sit and wait at doorways on command. Anika loves squeaky toys and also enjoys running around with toys at the park. Anika can be a bit of an independent dog, but she also does love some cuddle time as well. Anika is a smart girl and enjoys doing agility work. She can be a bit forward with other dogs, so she will do best as your only canine companion. She enjoys her twice-daily walks with her foster dad, then settles in while he works from home. Her foster dad tells us that Anika is house trained and crate trained.

How to adopt: If you would like to meet Anika, please complete a consultation form (found on the Friends for Life website at www.azfriends.org), or come by their adoption center in Gilbert at 952 W. Melody Ave. You can also email debbie@azfriends.org to arrange a meeting to meet Anika. Anika will also be at the Friends for Life adoption center on Saturdays until adopted. Anika is spayed, microchipped, licensed and current on vaccinations and her adoption fee is $150.
