Scrappy and more pets up for adoption

- — Emma Helfrich, Arizona Humane Society

Every year, approximately 6.5 million companion animals enter shelters nationwide, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Of those, about 3.3 million are dogs and 3.2 million are cats.

Each week, The Arizona Republic highlights a handful of the many pets up for adoption at Valley shelters. To check the status of a specific animal, please contact the shelter directly.

Scrappy: Looking for a forever home

Sour Patch would have also been a great name for Scrappy because he loves to be a little sour before he allows you to see his sweet side. This 7-yearold gray tabby domestic shorthair cat is good at setting his boundaries, but any cat lover knows that all it takes is the right person and some patience before the purring begins.

Scrappy was originally brought in as a stray without a microchip, making it so his life before being rescued is sadly a mystery. Once in AHS’ care, he wasn’t exactly greeting everyone with open arms, but the shy boy was dealing with a painful pelvic injury and a less-than-ideal dental situation that made it hard for him to relax. After some tender love and care, though, Scrappy finally proved that he has it in him to warm up to people despite his aloof personality.

This boy very much prefers to go at his own pace, that’s all. If he feels rushed or threatened, his stray instincts will take over and leave him grumpy, but it’s nothing personal! If you let him take his time with you, all he’ll want is chin scratches and cuddles.
