PHOENIX – Janitolene “Jan” Moore, 85, of Phoenix, AZ, passed away peacefully on January 19, 2024, surrounded by her family & friends. Jan was born on April 26, 1938, in Tularosa, NM, to Harvey & Oline Whitfield of Alabama. She was the oldest of 5 children, 3 sisters & 1 brother and graduated from Gallup High School in 1956. She attended Arizona State University, was an active member of the Tri-Sigma Sorority and received her BA in Education & a Master of Arts in Special Education from ASU. Her 42 yrs of teaching was all within the Scottsdale Unified School District, where she began at Hopi Elementary School & finished in 2003 at Ingleside Middle School, all as a 6th grade teacher. Jan married her college sweetheart, Fred W. Moore, Jr. shortly after his return from serving in the Navy in 1962. The two celebrated over 61 years of marriage. They were blessed with 2 daughters, Erin Garmon (Brian) & Jennifer Clark (David), along with 4 grandchild­ren, Declan Garmon, Colemann Clark, Merran Garmon & Savannah Clark. Jan & Fred loved animals, especially dogs & birds, they were active members in the Saguaro Kennel Club in their early years of marriage. Jan also was a member & past president of the Alpha Delta Kappa Teachers Fraternity of Arizona. She & Fred joined Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in 1980 & were active members in the choir, youth group sponsors, arts & crafts guild, sewing/quilting guilds, the alter guild, bible study & the Lutheran Cursillo Group. Outside of the classroom, Jan’s passion & talents were seen in her love of gardening & the arts. She has created several memories with countless friends over coffee, plants, flowers & designing new crafts for others in the community. Jan will be remembered for her love of teaching, reverence & dedication to God; devotion to Fred, her daughters & grandchild­ren, artistic spirit, kindness, joy of music & her green thumb. A Celebratio­n of Jan’s Life will be held Sunday, January 28, 2024, @ Noon at Price of Peace Lutheran Church 3641 N. 56th Street Phoenix. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to either Hospice of the Valley or the Alzheimer’s Associatio­n.
