PHOENIX – J. Byron Fanning, aged 80, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Saturday, February 10, 2024. He was the beloved husband of Barbara Fanning, with whom he shared a loving marriage since 1967. Together, they built a life filled with love, laughter, travel and cherished memories. Born in Brooklyn, NY, Byron grew up as a fiercely independen­t only child who always wanted a large family, and was a devoted father to his six children, Byron Jr., Victoria, Edward, Timothy, Barbara and Patrick. He took immense pride in his role as a father and leaves behind a legacy of unwavering love, guidance, and support. Byron was known best for his colorful sense of humor, giant heart and larger-than-life personalit­y. Byron was known for doing things his way as he had a strong sense of right and wrong, and also what was best for his family. He was an avid reader and a very devoted NY Giants’ and St. John’s University basketball fan. His kindness and generosity touched the lives of all who knew him, and his memory will be cherished by family and friends alike.

In addition to his family, Byron leaves behind a legacy of giving back to his community through his many acts of service and being a dedicated and active member of Alcoholics Anonymous for 45 years. Byron was a Vietnam-era veteran and spent his career in maritime transporta­tion services and government affairs. In addition to his wife and six children, Byron leaves behind a son-in-law, Todd Hochstetle­r, daughters-in-law Gail, Renee, and Adriana Fanning, and his beloved grandchild­ren, Devon, Byron, Aedan, Finn, and Emma.

Services will take place at The Casa Franciscan Renewal Center in Paradise Valley on Friday, February 23rd at 10:30am. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Byron’s name to either the Andre House or the Wounded Warrior Project. Byron’s spirit will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered.
