Here’s how the IRS is helping Phoenix taxpayers this year

- Russ Wiles russ.wiles@arizonarepublic.com.

With tax return filing season in full swing, the Internal Revenue Service is opening the doors at its Phoenix office for special hours on Feb. 24, with no appointments required for in-person assistance. The IRS Taxpayer Assistance Center at 4041 N. Central Ave. will be open that day from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. However, help in preparing tax returns won't be provided.

Ordinarily, IRS Taxpayer Assistance Centers are open Monday through Friday, with appointments normally needed. This Saturday, taxpayers may walk in for all services routinely offered, except for making cash payments. To make an appointment during regular hours, call 844-545-5640.

In addition, the IRS is providing inperson help outside of normal operating hours on Tuesdays and Thursdays at many Taxpayer Assistance Centers through April 16. The Phoenix center will open at 7:30 a.m. and close at 6 p.m. on these days, as will the IRS office at 1818 E. Southern Ave. in Mesa and the office at 7350 W. Camino San Xavier in Glendale, with the latter office closed from noon to 1 p.m. You can view more details on the IRS office here.

The IRS encourages visitors to come prepared and to bring current, government-issued photo identifications and Social Security numbers or Individual Taxpayer Identification Numbers for themselves and all members of their household. Taxpayers also should bring any letters or notices they received from the IRS. Taxpayers will need two forms of identification and a copy of the return for the year in question if it already has been filed. Other relevant information includes a current mailing address and proof of bank account information included on a tax return to receive payments or refunds by direct deposit.

Before visiting, the IRS encourages taxpayers to first check its website, irs.gov, for general information about Taxpayer Assistance Centers or other relevant information.
